Dr. Adam Chowaniec, Chair Ontario Research and Innovation Council
Innovation today continues to have an impact on our society as a whole. Todays changing dynamics of markets are
constantly challenging businesses to look for evolving, innovative approaches as to how they face business challenges by using
technology and the like. As a result, new business models and companies are incorporating innovation by understanding how technology works
and how this will enable them to solve their challenges and face todays changing market dynamics
8:45 – 9:20 am
Year in Review
Edward M. Gonsalves, Business
Development Mgr, Identification, NXP
Founded by Philips, NXP is a top ten semiconductor company with over 50 years of semiconductor experience. The Identification Business Unit is
a frequency agnostic and standards based organization which has shipped more than 2 Billion RFID ICs.
Much has taken place in the area of development, standards and
deployment over the last year. Gen 2 is now available and being
deployed in retail and supply chain. Credit Card companies have
completed their testing and are now implementing RFID-based payment
systems. E-Passport is being tested in numerous countries. Pharmaceutical
and health care are getting a lot of attention as other business
sectors such as transportation, transit, manufacturing, sports
and leisure, service industry and many others.
9:20 – 9:45 am
Impact of RFID
Richard Simpson, Director General, Electronic Commerce, Industry Canada
RFID is a strategic technology in terms of its ability to modernize supply chain management and increase firm efficiency. Its rapid and effective
deployment across all sectors of the economy is therefore a key to national competitiveness. However, a number of issues have emerged from an individual
or consumer perspective which could limit or retard the widespread adoption of RFID technologies. Industry Canada has been following the development of
RFID and its implications for Canadians and for Canadian business. Mr. Simpson will give a broad overview of the work that has been done to date with
the private sector, which will include discussing the challenges for government and business in the areas of: technology development, business adoption
and use, as well as privacy and security issues.
9:45 - 10:15 am
Networking Break and Exhibit Viewing
10:15 – 10:45 am
Security and Authentication
Hank Tomarelli, RFID Business Development Representative, Texas Instruments, Inc.
Brian Neill, CISSP Product Manager - Certicom Corp.
For product authentication using RFID to be effective within an industry, a single standardized
cryptographic methodology for tags and readers that provides both authentication and product encryption capability
is necessary. With its ability to enable “anywhere, anytime” authentication and data decryption by RFID readers
off-network, ECC RFID security is a compelling solution for item-level tagging standard going forward. This approach
for item-level tagging in a secure, yet open supply chain is applicable to a range of branded goods markets such as
high-value cosmetics, apparel, sports collectables, antiques and art. In all these applications consumer protection
from a secure RFID system not only comes in the form of product safety, but in raising the level of confidence for
consumers that they are getting the genuine goods.
10:45 – 11:15 pm
Payment
Nagesh Devata, VP, Acceptance Development & Product Solutions, MasterCard Worldwide
This is an overview of contactless/RFID payment applications and the benefits to retailers and consumers. Discussion will focus on MasterCard's PayPass
solution and approach to contactless payments including target retail environments and future payment form factors.
11:15 – 12:00 pm
RFID in the Supply Chain
Christopher S. Kelley, Director of RFID Business Development - Intermec Technologies Corporation
While there are many forms and uses for RFID, the growing adoption of passive UHF RFID for supply chain applications has captured the
imagination of many and resulted in some fantastic misses and hits. What are some of the proven and promising applications for passive UHF RFID
in the supply chain … and which should you avoid?
12:00 – 1:30 pm

RFID technology supporting the management of medical supplies in healthcare institutions.
This presentation will focus on a suite of applications that introduces RFID technology to support the management of medical supplies in healthcare institutions.
Released in 2006, the system was developed to manage the majority of common supplies stored and used on nursing units. It was specifically designed to enhance the
two bin replenishment method, a leading practice recognized internationally in the healthcare sector. In 2007, the system was expanded to manage consignment or
expensive items requiring tighter controls. This latest feature allows the system to cover the entire spectrum of medical supplies used in hospitals. In addition
to collecting all of the necessary data required for inventory management, the system gathers information required for clinical applications, such as the electronic patient record.
